"Hello Everybody...Recording Live from Somewhere. Lord Have Mercy..."-BlackStar, Definition
So I left the Americas...or as the Danes say "Oo Es Ay" on the 16th (my brother's 24th bday...happy bday big bro) and arrived all jetlegged the 17th. We (The DIS {danish institute for study abroad} Students) gathered at the ITU University in the Denmark. This institution is designed by infamous Danish architekt Henning Larsen, and is catered to the needs of the IT students. One cool feature is that there are ramps into the basement of the building so that one is able to ride their bike into the building and lock it in a garage, which also has lockers and a shower service to clean up in before class. I got picked up from my roommate's co-worker, Morten, who was a really nice and warm guy. He took me to where I live, a suburb 20 minutes away from downtown Kobenhaven, called Emdrup. We had dinner and made it a quiet night. The next day I took the train for the Opening Ceremony of the program. It was quite nice and accompanied by a Wind Quartet...but at 9Am, after hearing the faculty lecture us on "getting out of the box" I started getting tired. I met up with another UMass student and his friends for lunch in a nice cafe and then had a Survival Danish class. We went to the grocery store to decipher our new foods, and the teacher was very helpful. That night I went back home, observing the graffiti everywhere to meet my new roommate. No Dice. He was still on his Surf Trip, so I went back into the city to meet up with other students who live in Shared Housing near the "campus".
The next day, we had another orientation meeting in the morning (again at 9) and I had lunch with the same kids as the day before. Some decent Shawarma (from one of the many Shawarma shops...my dad would be really happy here). Had another Survival Danish class (and got to eat some Danish or "Wienerbrod"). I met up with this girl from Mt. Holyoke and we had dinner at my place (pad tai from down the road) and went out with the Americans. Crazy kids from all over, mostly from UVA or Washington (i think they had a recruiter). Met my roommate, Troels, who informed me that I already have a bike (YES), and i met his girlfriend. Nice guy, very tall and athletic.
Today, we had a Scavenger Hunt around the city and it was awesome! but cold. Russian weather hit us this morning and we walked around the city for hours learning about our new home. We had a program meeting. I'm in the Architecture + Design Program, with the only other two UMass students in the whole DIS program. Go U, Go UMass!
Just woke up from a nap and decided to start up this so called blog-thing on the interwebs. Going to get some groceries and head to the shanty-town/independent city Christiana (an old army base converted into a hippie commune, with a very interesting vibe). Tomorrow is our first day of classes and I hope to upload some photos to make this blog a wee bit more interesting.
Best,
Samer
